Aerospace/defense applications such as wireless communications, RADAR and Satcom require measurements that are accurate, repeatable and flexible. With high performance digitizers you can directly acquire, down convert and process RF wideband signals for accurate analysis of their characteristics.
Wide bandwidth digitizers from Guzik Test & Measurement capture and process RF signals for subsequent analysis with the Keysight Technologies 89600 Vector Signal Analysis (VSA) software. Guzik’s ADC 6000 series of digitizers perform digital down conversion (DDC) using built-in digital signal processing (DSP) hardware implemented in FPGA’s. This eliminates the need for large amounts of data to be transferred to a personal computer for analysis, reducing significantly the overall measurement time.
In the Guzik digitizers data from the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) are transferred to memory and from memory through a digital equalizer to the FPGA-based digital down converter. The down conversion is realized by two multipliers with Sin/Cos local oscillator (LO) signals. The down converted signals are connected through a Low Pass Filter/decimator to I/Q memory. They are then transferred to a personal computer so that the Keysight VSA software can perform the final processing and measurements related to the specific transmission standard. An input bandwidth of up to 13 GHz means that in many applications the input signal can be down converted directly.
The equalizer reduces misalignment between interleaved ADC’s within the high speed digitizer. The main effect of the equalizer is to increase the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR). The equalizer also corrects amplitude and phase frequency responses of the digitizer and minimizes the requirement for post-equalization in I/Q channels.
High Performance Digitizers for Aerospace/Defense
The FPGA-based DDC analysis bandwidth is adjustable from 120 kHz to 7.81 GHz (ADC6131 40 GSa/s), 60 kHz to 3.90 GHz (ADC6082 and ADC6044 20 GSa/s) and 30 kHz to 1.95 GHz (ADC6044 10 GSa/s). The frequency resolution of the local oscillator of the FPGA-based DDC is 0.0023 Hz (ADC6131 40GSa/s), 0.0011 Hz (ADC6082 and ADC6044 20 GSa/s) and 0.0006 Hz (ADC6044 10 GSa/s).
The bandwidth at the down converter output is significantly smaller than the bandwidth of digitizer itself. As a result noise level is reduced and the Effective Number of Bits (ENOB) is increased. If the span of the analyzed signal is, for example, 4 times smaller compared with digitizer bandwidth, the ENOB is increased by 1 bit.
The Guzik digitizers are implemented as AXIe modules and can be configured with a number of channel and speed combinations. Up to five 13 GHz (ADC6131), ten 8 GHz (ADC6082) or twenty 4 GHz (ADC6044) RF channels can be configured in the 5 slot AXIe Keysight M9505A 4U chassis. Eight instrument channels can be combined to perform quad baseband IQ (BBIQ) phase coherent measurements.
