Unintentional islanding testing has historically been a challenge in compliance testing and certification of inverters used to interface solar energy and battery storage with the power grid. Unintentional island testing for one inverter requires an intricate setup of grid emulator, large passive loads and relays, is labor intensive, and can take weeks to complete. The Keysight SL1200 grid emulator with built in Power Hardware-in-the-Loop (P-HIL) technology and resonant RLC autotuning drastically reduces the amount of equipment, labor, and time to complete this test. This novel solution turns a once daunting obstacle into a straightforward turn-key process, alleviating a bottleneck for enabling the commissioning of renewable energy sources.
